Strike Action

Dear Student

SOAS has been informed by ISS UK Ltd, the company which employs cleaning staff at the School, that following a ballot for industrial action, cleaning staff who are members of Unison will take strike action on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 March 2014. ISS is in direct communication with Unison and it is hoped this will lead to constructive discussions.

The dispute is between the cleaners and their employers, ISS UK Ltd. We expect staff to attend SOAS on these days but some may decide not to cross the picket line and this may impact on your classes. Staff scheduled to teach on these days should be in touch with you to confirm if scheduled classes will take place or if alternative arrangements have been made.

The School’s policy on dealing with any industrial action is to minimise disruption and to continue to provide as normal a service as possible. During these days of action, the key priority will be to minimise disruption to your teaching and learning. All the buildings will be open as usual including the Library, although there may be a reduced service.

The SOAS Policy for Dealing with Industrial Action can be found at

All students and members of staff are expected to behave in a respectful manner regardless of their position on industrial action. Students are expected to adhere to the principles of the Student Charter.
