The current module acknowledges tensions that exist between the commitment to take ethical approaches in global research and to abide by UK/Eu-based research governance standards. The course will consider how researchers can meet funder’s guidelines realistically without compromising their research objectives and their relationships with local partners and communities. The module is neither an ethics course per se nor data protection training, but an intersection between the two motivated by a reflexive, decolonial and governance-informed position. It aims to provide established academics, doctoral students and professional research staff with a platform to reflect on these issues and with tools to constructively navigate them. The module has been developed by Dr. Romina Istratii (Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Development Studies and Research Funding Officer in the Research Office) with review and feedback from Mr. Khalid Hassan (Governance Officer in the Research Office).
